Huawei insiders say the company will soon launch a new kirin chip.

According to sources, the new kirin chip may not be the kirin 985 that consumers have been expecting, but rather the kirin 720, a new midrange chip from Hays, which will succeed the kirin 710.

It has been rumored that the kylin 720 will be released with the new device in September, so it appears that it is premature.

The kylin 720 will reportedly be made by Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing (TSMC) and will use the 10nm process. The kylin 720 could be huawei's last chip to use an arm-designed core, the report said.

The kirin 710 is made with a 12nm process and has four ARM cortex-a73 cores with a 2.2ghz main frequency for complex tasks, while the other four ARM cortex-a53 cores have a frequency of 1.7ghz for general tasks. Its graphics processor (gpu) is the ARM Mali G51 MP4, while the kirin 720 is likely to be upgraded with gpus and NPU to improve chip performance.
