On June 18th Sedialy reported that Intel had begun talks with samsung about subcontract cpus to ease the embarrassment of a shortage. This is the first time Intel has asked samsung to build cpus for it.

Samsung has officially agreed to build Intel's Rocket Lake microprocessor, which will be released in 2021.According to sources, samsung will begin mass production of 14-nanometer Intel cpus in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Intel has a long history of capacity problems. In late September last year, Intel CEO Bob Swan promised to spend $1 billion to expand its 14nm production line.It is understood that the "Rocket Lake" manufactured by samsung is also a 14nm product.

Intel was apple's sole supplier of baseband chips last year. After taking over apple's big order, Intel took back the baseband chips originally made by TSMC and outsourced some entry-level processors to TSMC.Bob Swan said production of memory and baseband chips will continue to expand in 2019, with new capacity being released in the second quarter of this year.

Now, after apple's settlement with qualcomm, Intel's baseband chip business is under a cloud.Last year, the iPhone baseband chip was made by Intel's 14nm process, the same production line as the PC chip.

The base band shelving should have freed up a lot of capacity, but judging by Intel's outsourcing of "Rocket Lake" to samsung, its 14nm capacity remains tight. However, Intel's 10nm "Ice Lake" line of products is already in production. Bob Swan said 14nm will continue to increase production capacity.
